Just as there was no area of our lives that was untouched by our disease, and there is no area of our lives that goes untouched by the solution. In recovery, we can become the people we’ve always wanted to be and live the lives we’ve always dreamed of living.

I sin so naturally, effortlessly and usually without even trying. I believe my so-called defects of character are linked to my underlying emotional disorder of alcoholism.

I had many old ideas and prejudices that had to be examined and released. However, the Twelve Steps also provide a solution to much more than the disease of alcoholism. The 12-Step process has many remarkable and positive side effects that come along with it. We can also see this as years of not being able to regulate our negative emotions properly, if you wish to see them as sins. The 12 steps were influenced by the Oxford Group who said sins cut a person off from God, and that there was such a thing as sin disease.

Again, we may not initially consider our professional lives in early recovery. It’s probably not the best area to focus on in early recovery anyway. But after we have a little time and experience in the 12-Step program, we will likely want to address our professional lives — especially because this area of our lives is often grievously affected by the disease. Through active engagement with the Twelve Steps and the program of spiritual malady recovery, we find ourselves presented with lessons and opportunities that allow us to repair and improve our professional lives. Many alcoholics and addicts in recovery find themselves gainfully re-employed, receiving better employment than they ever thought possible, or even returning to school to secure more beneficial employment. Suffice to say that recovery benefits our professional lives as much as our personal lives.

It is this that propelled my addictions, this inability to deal with my negative emotions. I dealt with them externally via addictive behaviours, not internally via emotion processing. This mesh of negative emotions can link up fairly instantaneously I find. In other words it is the consequence of my fear based condition, this affective disorder. For example, false pride, intolerance, impatience, arrogance, shame, lust, gluttony, greed. Though our decision was a vital and crucial step, it could have little permanent effect unless at once followed by a strenuous effort to face, and to be rid of, the things in ourselves which had been blocking us.
